If I might suggest the addition of a 'kicker' at the base. (Don't know what this is called in the US. Foot room essentially). Like a normal kitchen, much more comfortable to use esp. towards the back of the planter.

Generally called a "toe kick" here.

I thought I'd post an update on this project. The design that was accepted by the committee is this one.
The planters were built in the last few weeks and installed yesterday. Minor construction changes but in general, what the committee chose.
Planting will begin when it finally warms up. Snow possible this evening.
