I'm looking for an extension (or easy technique) of creating a shell of an object. This means creating a group that wraps the external volume of an object.

The solid tools in SU Pro can do that, I think the 3rd party solid tools (BoolTools2 by Whaat & Solid Tools by Eneroth) will also do that. You might want to take a look at Meshwrapper (on EW I think) as well.

Outer shell would work if the model was set up correctly but not as it is in your example. Since Outer shell already exists and is included in both Pro and Make, it doesn't make sense to reinvent the wheel.

So how do I set up the model correctly? I tried outer-shell on my real model and it didn't work. Also, my model is quite complex, so is there a way to quickly fix it so outer-shell would work?

Each group needs to be solid. In your example, the largest group is not solid because you've nested the smaller group inside it. If you move the small group outside the larger group, Outer Shell works just fine.

So then I can't apply outer solid on a component that contains groups? my alternative is to explode an instance and then "fiddle" with the groups?

You can move the nested groups out of the larger group and then use Outer Shell. It sounds to me as if you are searching for an extension to overcome poor modeling technique.
