.skp file not updated on save
-
I have a file that refuses to update the .skp file on saving. What I do get is progressive .skb files, 01, 02, etc. in windows explorer, but the .skp file does not update, the time stamp remains the same. If I exit Sketchup, and then re-enter, when attempting to open the file I get a message that the file is locked by another user...there are no other users. My only choice is to reboot.
I tried making a new .skp file, then copying all of the entities from the misbehaving .skp file into the new .skp file, but the glitch comes over with the copy.
Any ideas?

I figured it out, and this may or may not apply to other Windows 8.1 users. If you use file preview in Windows explorer, then the .skp thumbnail seems to get locked in the process, Windows does not release it. When I tried to delete the accumulating .skb files, Explorer warned me that the files were open in COM surrogate, some kind of thumbnail jailhouse, since Explorer apparently does not trust thumbnailer code?? By simply turning off the file preview in Explorer, the .skb files could be deleted.
I also turned off the file preview in Explorer, when trying to insert a file into Layout, this seems to be a different process, as turning the preview off in Windows directly did not affect the Explorer file preview set-up when loaded by Layout. Not sure if there was a 'grab and hold' happening there also, but now all is well.

there was a post about this over on the 'official' forum, did you see it?

I had the same problem yesterday for the first time. I run Windows 8.1, 64 bit and the latest Sketchup Pro 2015.
I use Sketchup for garden design and when inserting planting material, I like to use the Windows file explorer utility, aimed at my plant component folders in "Extra Large Icon" view. It's so much clearer than using the component window within Sketchup and you can simply drag the components you want across into your model.
The problem I had yesterday was that after closing my design model and opening it a while later, I realised that it hadn't saved my last hours worth of work, (despite the fact I'm always saving work as I go). I did find however that it had saved a bang up-to-date backup, (Skb) file, so I restored from that. I also found that if I tried to open my original Skp model, it had the same message that Fountainhead experienced - I was told the file was locked by another user and I could only open it in read-only mode.
I'm not sure if this falls into the category of a Windows glitch or a Sketchup glitch ?

I would say SU glitch... before the very recent patch release, (15.3.331 64bit) we had no thumbnails and Win explorer crashed when trying to select any file in a folder where a skp resided.
We now have thumbs and no crashesBut I am am getting the same error as you,
"The file is already open can only be opened in read-only mode".I am seeing a couple of other things in the workspace as well, bit hard to explain here, but SU seems to be getting a bit flaky.

Same happens to me. I click it until it lets me open it. Usually about three times.
As for the recursively creating skb files, I have found out that SUSOLIDS makes it worse. After I removed the plugin that didn't happened that much.
