Extruding a profile - complex shapes
-
Dear all,
I trust everyone is well, I am having a real nightmare trying to suss this out. I have a curved wall in my model, off of this curve I have some niches around the opening of the niches I am trying to run an extrusion profile. The profile needs to twist around the curve and remain perpendicular to the face. I have tried everything, upright extruder, loft along path, follow me, extrude edges by face, extrude along sloping curved path, I have blown the model up to a massive size and am at my wits end. Please see the pictures below that show the curve of the wall, the niche area and a section through the profile - you will see how its not twisting to the correct plane. I am using the outside face as the extrusion path but as you can see by the time it gets to the top of the arch its twisted in and overlapped with the shell of the niche, see the last picture below. Any help greatly appreciated. Many thanks

i can'see exactly what's your exact problem (mainly due to my bad english) but if you have a problem with twisted shapes you should consider also to use "extrude edges by rails" or maybe "helix along curve" .. depending on the exact way your profile twists.. also curviloft has some intersting twist functions..

Thanks Panixia, tried most of what you have suggested already, will try helix along a curve, is that a separate plugin?

If I understand it, the wall is a simple arc and the molding is related to the surface of the wall. Would it be possible to make the extruded molding as if it were on a flat wall, then bend it with Shape Bender, into an arc (in plan)?
As for the curved shape of the window embrasure, I think it would need to be created and then trimmed to the molding. Or created with edges (curves) from the molding after that's in place. Great stuff BTW!

thanks guys, its a real bugger this one, just gonna have to fudge it I think. The plasterers have worked it out on the set and even they were scratching their heads as to how best to achieve it. Ill put this one down to experience and move on, Still annoying though!!!

Shape bender works fine. Good luck though. Send pictures if you have time.Very cool work.
