that isn't strictly a rendering, more of a photo manipulation (aka photoshop) exercise

Well actually, strictly speaking, A rendering is an artistic depiction of something.
But feel free if you wish to limit your use of the word to a computer generated image from a particular type of software, I'll stick with calling my pencil sketches renderings.
