Upgrading to SU 2013/2014, is it worth it?
-
Hello,
We are currently running SU 8 at our office and are looking to upgrade to either 2013 or 2014. I'm interested in hearing other people's experiences when making the move from 8 to the newer versions. I'm hesitant to upgrade only because of the relatively short time 2014 has been out in comparison to SU8 and the potential bugs that still lurk within the program. Thanks for reading, and I've compiled some questions that have been on my mind:
- Does 2013/2014 offer more stability than version 8?
- Have any of you had problems transferring SU8 models over to the newer versions?
- What are the pros, if any, of staying with version 8?
- Is it smarter to upgrade to 2013 or 2014?
- Are there any stability differences between make and pro versions?

There were quite a number of bug fixes and changes in both SU2013 and 2014. There won't be any problem opening SU8 models in either version. Your profile indicates you're using the free version of SU8 and it sounds as if you are using it for commercial purposes. If you intend to continue using the free version, you would be wise to read the EULA. In short, the free versions of SU2013 and SU2014 are not for commercial use. If you are going to be using the pro version, at this point you'll be buying SU2014 because SU2013 isn't currently supported.
In the pro version LayOut has also been improved quite a lot.

Well said!
2014 as two major improvements. Layout if you're interested is much better than before. For me that's the #1 reason to upgrade it. From 8 to 2013 there was already a big enough improvement.
2014 has also revamped Ruby wich means more power to ruby scripters. This poses a question as there are already some plugins that work only on 2014 (not many) whilst there are a bunch of plugins that ceased working on 2014. Anyway forward is the way to go.

the other thing to take account for is which osx do you have installed...
Trimble are dropping older osx versions with each new version, so if your fanny-ing about you may have missed the boat...

I think it's worth repeating that 2014 has the new version of Ruby and while that has caused a few issues with a few plugins not working, new plugins are less likely to work with the older system. No doubt more and more we will see 'Requires SU2014 and up'.
