The problem is I cannot show or share the model as it's a prototype for a company. I did the model a while back and printing it was never mentioned then so I modeled for patent purposes only, now they need to print it and the model is not water tight.
Is there a software out there that can skin a model? create a solid model from a crappy one?

This is the same problem in many fields like space and the medical field, its hard to clean a course surface, to get a smooth surface the stacking surface layers can't be greater then 45 degree from vertical.
Also if you can model it by slicing them many times and then simplified. This will make it smoother exterior
I feel interior cutouts of any shape should be a unbroken spear, it ok to elongate it vertical but not horizontal when you test the layer center of volume make sure it moments is balance so it doesn't fall over
If you use object is used in multiple direction some stiffing may be needed and use a perfect spear, to cut-out from interior solid objects from counterpoint
Rule of thumb:
Stable object is a pyramidal shape that wont fall over in earth quake, right!
Strong inter shape think of romans arches or domesQuick and dirty way of making it water tight:
Print haft then spray water sealent on the inside and then coat the outside with a coat of your materials or aniode meteals, or for plasic spray acetone after printing object. (fit hafts togather with a glue bound with wegets)You can use a 3d pen to fix defects
Also beteen the thin skin inside and outside walls is a 3d skin mesh may be used:( make it water tight)
to make 3d skin inner spear mesh use the joint push-pull tool-Fredo6 then interface with model trim out side away.

There is also an online version of Netfabb that is much more powerful than the downloadable version. Simply upload your model as an .STL file (exporter available here), and in a few minutes you can download a cleaned, and usually watertight model ready for 3D Printing.
That service has not failed me yet, and their terms of service say they will treat your model with confidentiality. It may fail if the model has large parts missing, as the fixing is all automatic, but if the model just has lots of small errors you should be just fine.

Glad to hear it's sorted!
Marcus told me about that netfabb a while back and it's been great, although I didn't realise there was a difference between online version and downloadable one.
When/if you get permission to disclose the project, why not share some images of the printed model? Good luck and all the best Pete.

Just a tip
freeform is a free program
Just bring your object to freeform and then you transfer to Sculpteo then it has a auto 3d print function with some menus that will 3d print then by a 3d print service and then auto mailed them back to you. all objects will be analyze before the service prints them.
So no junk gets printed.I don't think its auto fix skins to every model? just those made in freeform
I need to play with freeform soon
