Can't set .skp program association
-
I'm not sure where to post this question - tried General Discussion, but didn't find a new post link. I have both SketchUp 8 and SketchUp 2013 installed on my Windows 7 pc. Of course, when 2013 was installed , the .skp file associations were also changed to use 2013. When I try to set the default program association back to SketchUp 8, the process is ignored. I can
change the default association for .skp to any of the listed or recommended programs in the default program selection window successfully. But, when I browse and select SketchUp 8, nothing is changed. Any ideas as to why this might be happening ? -
If you are trying to open SKP files by double clicking on them, the last opened version of SketchUp will open. Just open SU8, maybe open a model file or something and then close SketchUp. You should be able to double click on files now and have them open in SU8. Keep in mind that of course any SKP files saved in SU2013 will not open in SU8 [unless you use save_as... to v8].

I opened SU8 and loaded an skp file and then simply saved it back. Also, tried it without the save. Dble-clicks on the file still defaults to SU2013. It's almost as if the OS is recognizing SU8 and SU2013 as the same executable and makes no change. SU8 doesn't show up as one of the registered entries under 'Other Programs' in the default program selection window and has to be browsed for. If I could ever figure a way to get there, SU8 might become selectable.

Hi. In my particular instance, Sketchup 2013 established its own folder in my c> program files x86> Sketchup subfolder. Sketchup 8 still resides in C> program files x86> Google subfolder. While this may have no bearing on your issue, perhaps when selecting the alternate program to open the skp file you may need to search for 2013 a little farther down the folder list.
Like I say, this may not be a solution to the issue. -

run SU8 by "right-click > Run As Admin..." once.
Which should allow SU8 to reset itself as the default app for opening SKPs in the Windows registry database.

This! For some reason, .skp files were not associated with sketchup and I was not able to use the 'open with' or the 'default programs' route to associate sketchup with .skp files. This worked. Thank you!

You can reset the default by renaming the . exe file. Sketchup changes the default exe to sketchup.exe as they expect you to only use one version. If you want SU8 as your daily use but still have su13 for when you need it, navigate to the su13 folder and change the exe to sketchup13.exe This lets you choose the one in the su8 folder as the default open with. This is a workaround and not really the right thing to do, however I haven't found any problems with doing it.
