I've been working on a project for a client that involves modeling some cabriole legs. Typically when cab legs are shown in a SketchUp model they are just shown with a hard line over the knee and down to the foot. Sometimes the turned bit of the foot pad itself is omitted. I wanted something a bit better than that and this is what I've come up with. I could make it smoother but in the final product it'll be shown as a hidden line drawing with no shading so I think this will fly. I still need to draw the transition pieces that attach to the sides of the legs but those will be easy enough.

There might be a tutorial coming down the road.

I did a cabriole leg I believe it was from a tutorial you did on your blog and just looked at it and had a hard edge as you said. Will be interesting as to how you do this one will be watching Dave. Maybe with curviloft or one of Tig's plugins.

Some years ago I did a pad foot leg that was turned using multiple centers but I don't think I've ever shown a cab leg. My blogging partner, Tim Killen has shown cab legs but he does two crossing Push/Pull operations and leaves the sharp corners.

All the joinery is complete. Only the drawers pulls and lock escutcheon left to draw.

I'm sure there is some sort of medicated ointment that'll sort them out for you.

Very nice Dave! I have tried various methods for smoothing the "corners" of cabriole legs, with mixed success and often a lot of work needed to get the area around the top of the foot right. I'd be very interested in any info you can provide on how you went about this.

I'll see if I can make the mesh view this evening.

A tutorial will be coming but it needs some refining, first.

                            Beautiful modeling Dave.

Quick question: though I realize it's not part of this piece's design, have you tried modeling a cabriole leg with a ball-and-claw foot in SketchUp?

                              Hi Doug,

                              Thank you.

I have done a ball and claw foot in the past and it was a regular PIA. I imagine I could do one more easily with the method I used for most of this leg, though. I hadn't thought about it before.
