I was wondering if there such a plugin that would allow me to select surfaces by their texture even if they are inside a group or component.
The overall goal is to be able to change textures quickly

Just for that you can also try Thomas's material replacer.

or native to sketchup you can use the dropper to select a texture and then use browse feature under texture editor tab to replace it everywhere it occurs.
