Drawing Face Front Back
-
I have a long time problem in that I cannot figure out why Faces do not always draw with the face side facing the viewer. Sometimes the face is drawn facing the viewer and other times not.
I just want to confirm that this is still uncontrollable or is there a fix?.

I think it is because the software thinks in 3d so a face on it's own would be seen as the beginnings of a 3d shape, if that is the case it would expect to be pulled up into a shape so the side facing you would be the inside. Whereas if the face is draw on another face it could go either way, so it doesn't assume or guesses wrong.

Under the right click menu you have Reverse faces or Orient faces(this should help you if you don't have internal faces) .

Here's a simple observation:
If you orbit the camera so that the horizon is viewable in the scene, get the pencil tool and just draw a rectangle in a clockwise direction above the horizon you will get a rectangle with a white face toward the camera. If you then draw a rectangle in an anti-clockwise direction, you will get a rectangle with the grey face toward the camera.
In the process of filling in faces, Sketchup interprets the order of the vertices and orients the faces accordingly. The interpretation often depends on adjacent geometry and whatever prior operations you have performed on that geometry, so, sometimes it seems unpredictable. -

However, it does not seem to make a difference whichever direction that I draw an object.

It makes a big difference in which way you draw your rectangle, looking north, south, east or west or down. You may have some help with something I made a few years ago: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=509c2a6868ab3855b2dd3120ca5e0662
(Circles may act different!)
But it's better to forget about the whole thing and only remember and concentrate on what is important in good modeling. Ultimately all white (front) faces face outward.
