hi there, i'm new to sketchup and have a problem with the push pull tool. i tried to make a cube measuring 1.2m x 80 cm x 6mm. the problem is, it won't allow me to pull 6mm (0.006)up and defaults to 0.01. could anyone explain why please? thanks.

Go to the top menu, click window and select model info, then go to the units tab and adjust the accuracy and snapping length there.

Especially turn off Length Snapping and set Precision to something higher than you would work in the shop. For woodworking you'll probably want to set the Units to millimeters, too.
Do this in a fresh, blank SketchUp file and then go to File>Save as template and save the file making sure you have ticked the box for Use as default. That way, in the future, when you open SketchUp, these settings will already have been made for you.

Is this a nw featyre in SU8 or did I just miss it in previous versions? -
I think the Save as template thing was new in SU8 a few years ago but you could still create your own template and use it in previous versions so overall it's not anything new.

SketchUp 8 was released in 2010.
Which version are you using and why don't you take a few minutes to update your profile to include it?

The fact that I didn't update SU for years, I was still with version 6 till a few week ago (I didn't use it so often till I discovered online 3d printing).
Then I tried to download a new version... but Google/Trimble sites are a mess and I can't understand what to download: Google version? Trimble version? Free? Trial? Paid? Limited? Unlimited? Make? Pro? Expireware?
What a mess!And above all, why the heck does the installer need admin privileges, if once installed it's just a matter of moving the folder to another PC to have SU perfectly up and running?

Where did you come up with all those versions? There is no Google version to download anymore. Although you could still download the pro version of SU8, they have made it so you have to search a little. It's not a difficult search but they do want you to use the currently supported version which is easy to understand.
As to the admin thing for installing, don't blame the software. That's coming from the OS. The software doesn't require you to have administrative privileges but the OS is trying to protect your computer from you and others who might be interested in doing bad things to it. If you are using Windows XP, there's no need for the administrative privileges because the OS doesn't care.
