Snap problem solved

I have encountered a strange snap problem:
all of a sudden, after copying and pasting a (flat in z) group from another sketchup drawing, snapping didn't work any more on my drawing
the points were there and visible, endpoints of regular lines within this group, but the cursor didn't find them, nor inside, nor outside the group
zoomed in, zoomed out, both inside and outside the group, tilting, panning, all to no avail
I closed the file and reopenend it, no solution
I exited all, restarted my computer, reopened the sketchup drawing
then I was able to draw say 3-4 correct connecting lines between snapping points
but the problem came back, probably after closing the group
very frustrating
continued searching, finally found the problem:
apparently the group was on the same z-level as an imported picture, which must have confused sketchup
hiding this picture or moving either the picture or the group to another z-level made all snapping work again
