SU13 inference engine
-
I am finding that something has definitely gotten worse in the inference engine for SU13, at least on the MAC side of things.
Especially noticeable when pulling guide lines while locked on an axis but trying to inference off the center of a line segment that is not in the same plane. This is failing so much that I have resorted to just snapping a construction line to the center and then pulling another one down to the correct elevation plane.
Also, when checking that two items are lined up, it is almost impossible to get a blue center as opposed to just a black square. So, no visual difference between something lined up or off by 1/16" or less. This is noticeably less functional than in SU8.
anyone else experiencing this?

I haven't upgraded to SU 2013 because someone I work with is having this exact issue - they are running Vista 32 bit on a pretty old laptop but had no issues on SU 8.....
Has anyone found a workaround and is it related to this: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/sketchup/fN_Vp_dx-fQ/Ix-lVoEp0csJ

Or perhaps your problem (being that you are on a mac) is related to this: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/sketchup/trmXYw1MZV4/kjLayBMu5s0J

I haven't seen any problems related to inferencing on my Mac but I'm current on the OS. Maybe you found the issue, Ash?

I know nothing about mac - just saw that thread as I was digging for a solution to the problem my friend is having on Vista.

Hey Chuck, do you have a model with a small example of where inferencing is failing in 2013? Id pass it on to the engineers as an example. Thanks,
Chris

After experimenting some more, I think this is what is going on.
let's say I want to set some construction lines on a push/pulled hexagon. I draw the hexagon, pull it up, and rotate it so one of the faces is on the green axis.
I grab a line on the top and start pulling the construction line across in the red axis. If I don't lock the axis, i get all the snaps I expect on the top face. If I lock that axis, then the inference engine will give me a snap to the vertices on the top or bottom of the cube, but won't give me any middle points.
So, for some reason, Sketchup is sometimes differentiating between a red axis lock and a red axis not locked, even if though both are identical.
Is anyone else experiencing this? In the attached animation, I first show the behavior not locked, then locked, then not locked, and finally locked. And, if I set a construction line up perpendicular to the starting edge (on green axis) and pull out on that line while locking the direction, then the snapping behavior gets even more peculiar.
I never really noticed this behavior before and haven't taken the time to experiment with earlier versions of SU, so I can't categorically state that this is a new issue.

See that on my Mac. I set up a hexagon and pulled it up to make it 3D. then I tried dragging a guide line in off and edge. If the direction for the Tape Measure tool is locked with Shift, I don't get the midpoint indications although I do get endpoint indications. Without locking the direction I do get the midpoint. That behavior is different from SU8.
Funny thing, though, until I used your set up, I never had any occasion to run into this issue.
Out of curiosity, OTB, why do you have to rotate the hexagon? Why not draw it with the edge parallel to the green axis?
-
Hi Dave, great to hear you are seeing the same thing on your machine.
When I drag out a hexagon, it pulls from a vertex; how could I pull it so that the edge is oriented with the axis if I only have control of the vertex without setting a construction line at30º off the axis (for a hexagon)?
-
So do you just pull the shape out in a random direction? Do you do that with circles, too? If you pull the hexagon out with the green trailing line, two opposite vertices will be on a line parallel to the green axis and two sides of the hexagon will be parallel to the green axis.
-
Good point, that does work for a hexagon. I just pulled to the right and then wanted to pull the construction line to the right, too, for the video. Should have pulled down and saved a step...
Of course, with a pentagon...
I guess I need another cup of coffee, haha
-
Sure. With a pentagon...
More coffee.....
You didn't answer my question about drawing circles but do make sure you drag their radii out on axis when you draw them. It'll save you all sorts of trouble later.

I just set a Sketchup Pro 8 model to meters when I should have had it set to mm. It behaved pretty weird - kinda like you are describing in SU2013. Is it possible that there is an error in the way SU 2013 reads measurement and that is causing it to freak out?

I am also having this issue with my mac. I have been using since 7 and I have noticed a big difference from 7 and 8 to 2013 when trying to "pull tape". Its gotten worse, maybe? Could be user error, but I do use SketchUp every day and feel like its just become a problem. It seems to be just when you have a solid like your pentagon, grouped and you try to pull tape on top of it. I was able to find mid points along the side that ran along the axis but not off axis. Now…..If the pentagon was ungrouped or exploded at this point it did not seem to be a problem.
I also want to ask from the comment made before…. Why? does it matter in this case of infrencing which way you have you circle/polygon rotated. A midpoint is a mid point, Right? 10.8.5 > 2.66 GHz i7 > 8 GB RAM
-
Orientation kinda matters because it could inference along one of the model's axis lines (red, green, or blue) or if it is close to one of these axis lines it may snap to it rather than the point you are trying to inference to.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening? Its obviously not an isolated issue.
