Puzzling .net 4 requirement

I can not install Sketchup 2013 on my PC.
That is to say the 4 .Net insisted on by the Sketchup installer errors out before it finishes installing. This is puzzling because I have had the Microsoft Net 4 client services installed on my machine for years and it is currently up to date, but for some reason, the Sketchup Installer doesn't think that is good enough.
Every older version of Sketchup including 8 that I have tried run works just fine on my PC, so I suspect that if I could just get past the Net 4 install failure that maybe things would run OK from that point.
I would like to try to install Sketchup 2013 without re-installing the 4 .Net version insisted on by the Sketchup 20113 installer.
Is there any way to do this?
