Workflow Strategies
-
I have started this architectural model and I am wondering how others go about their work flow. I start with Bentley MicroStation and create the floor-plans and elevations in 2d, then import as dwg files.
All work is done on layer 0 and as I create each level's walls and floors I make them components, then create a layer for that item.
As I build the roof shapes is the preferred way that all of the roof is one entity?
As I circled in the one attachment the gable space is open. Should the second floor walls be extended up to the roof or is this a new component? Also with each part being a component the lines separating each are visible.
I am not looking to do a photo rendering but I want to add siding and trim so I can use the front, rear and side views in my construction documents.
Just curious how others go about this.
Thanks,
Larry

it's whatever works for you. layers are primarily used for visibility, so if you want that part of the wall to be with the roof, or as part of the walls, or as something separate, it's really up to how you want it to look. personally, it would be part of the walls.
as for the lines being visible, go into the components and hide the lines (ctrl + eraser tool).
check out this thread, which has links to other threads. hope it helps.

Shift+Eraser instead. Ctrl would soften them (which also hides but would give an ugly shading effect on such sharp edges).

my mistake. i do it automatically by touch, so i've never really thought about it!

Thanks for the tip about shift+Eraser. Wasn't aware of it. In my architectural practice I have been using SketchUp primarily to create actual physical models. In this case each face is a separate piece that I laser cut to make the model.
I want to start using SketchUp for presentation work to show clients the designs using the SimLab 3D PDF plugin.

Wow that's awesome! Definitely go post that in the gallery. I think lots of people would be interested in seeing that and asking about your workflow. Very cool!
