Confused with Image Perspective
-
Hi:
Attached is a photo and a sketchup file. I brought the image into sketchup and pulled out the porch to 7 feet. The post is located at the corner of the porch (left). When I pull out the porch roof beam (architrave) it should rest on the center of the post.As you see it is way off. I am thinking this has to do with perspective but really can't figure out how this is happening and what if anything I can do. I scaled the house to 36' long. The porch should be 25' but it's not.
thanks

Yes, it is a perspective problem. If you have the chance to take a new photo, you can
- take the picture from far away with a big focal length or
- take a photo in the direction of the corner and use photomatch
With this photo it will be very difficult to achieve the desired solution...

When you are using Match Photo, it's probably good to keep the Match Photo scene in the file for reference. Also the original photo would help as in this case, I suppose you are adding back the former structure. In the picture you post it's hard to say what aligns in regards to beams and posts. (One of the beams looks higher.)
At this point I would decide what is right in the model and work off that. I would scale the porch to be 25' long and line it up so that the cornice / column / porch alignmnet works on the left (assuming you decide the beam location is "right"). I'd check that the other end of the porch has the correct alignment with the house, such that you can complete the model as intended with steps etc.
Match Photo can only go so far and is generally inaccurate, just by the nature of what we are asking it to do. Even field measurements on an old house can be misleading.
[Edit: I looked at your former posts and see that you may have not used Match Photo in this version. Still the process is similar in accuracy. The image can only help so far before you just have to apply your own drawing skills to make it work.]

Hi - I did not use match photo but imported it as an image. Actually I did what I needed to do for the client in photoshop and now re-doing it in SU to practice. I thought this is a good house to learn on.
I did not think of scaling the porch since the house was scaled. I guess any part of the house that is not flat with the siding such as the eaves and porch will need separate scaling.
If I had an angled photo and used match photo, would that solve the problem?
I would think that accurate scaling would be a problem with an angled photo too.
