I have been trying to get Cut List 4.1.5 working on my Mac with little success.
I do get a cut list, but no cut layout (choosing svg but no output).
Also, I get the message "Some parts were left which could not be placed on given stock. Try larger sizes."
Anyone know what is going on?

      Thanks for any help.
[mod=TIG:l513etpo]I changed the title to make it more obviously a 'Cut List' question.
Also look here http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=39957&start=0 which is a closely related topic...[/mod:l513etpo]

Dave Richards has written extensively about it at his Fine Woodworking "Design Click Build" blog.
Here is a link to a Cut List search I did on his site.http://www.finewoodworking.com/search/search.asp?cx=009096020989677304441%3Ayn5icbkse5w&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=cutlist+plugin
I have used it on my mac and got all elements to work, but as I recall (it's been a while) on my machine it was the file path which was placing the layout in an odd file.

        Just monkeying around....like Monsanto

The lack of displayed layouts on Mac is a well-documented thing. It's a Safari and HTML thing. Ticking the SVG box should get you SVG files of the layout saved in the same location as the SKP file. These images are not automatically displayed. You must open them in some application.

As to the message about some parts not fitting, change the dimensions of the stock in the Layout section of the UI. If you have parts that would be made of plywood or other sheet goods make sure the component definition names include one of the Sheet Material words or add your own to that list.

          See also this link.

          Thanks Dale.

Think I got it to work. I had to include the word "plywood" in the component name in order for it to pick it up. Hope that is the right way to do it.
Also, thanks for the link Dale. I will check it out.

Yes, that's the right way to do it (as I said in my previous post) or you can add your own sheet material words to that list as well.

Thanks Dave. Previously, I had the word "plywood" in the description field of the component, not in the name field.

That doesn't work as you found out. I added the word ply to the sheet material words so I didn't have to type plywood in each definition name.

Actually, if you apply materials to your model and you included a sheet material word in the name of the material, the plugin will pick it up there, too. I rarely apply materials to models for which I'm going to generate a cut list so I don't use that feature.

Remember to add part words to things that aren't to be included in the lumber or sheet materials words so they get sorted to the right location. Hardware and pulls and such don't need to be in the lumber section.

Thanks Dave, so for lumber, it will pick it up without adding any keywords to it?

One other question. How do you distinguish between different thicknesses of plywood. I am using 3/4 for most of the carcass with 1/2 for the back of a wall shelf/cabinet I am building

Yes. Unless otherwise specified, the components get read as lumber. If you have several different woods, you can get separate board foot calculations for each by applying different materials to the component faces.

By the way, make sure you correct the component bounding boxes for parts drawn at angles so the bounding box fits tightly to the component. The plugin returns the dimensions of the bounding box. If it isn't aligned with the geometry, the board foot calculation will be incorrect.

As to the thickness of the parts, they get sorted out automatically in the cut list. Just draw the panels at the appropriate thickness. No need to add anything related to thickness in the definition name or description.
