Metal Gear Rex
-
Wanted to start a new project with some diffulties and searched for days, till it hit me:
My all time favorite robot/mech: Metal Gear Rex from the Metal Gear Solid game-seriesAfter I decided it could be a good kandidate for a new project, I was worried I couldn't find enough pictures and such to transfer it to my own model.
Lucky me: big figurine producer 3A just anounced and released (?) a full on Metal Gear Rex figure in full detail and with working joints so there is enough info to go on.I intend to model/render it in full detail. So first up is the modeling of all the pieces, parts and plates and then detailing all the stuff. It's gonna take a while, but the greater the reward
Time to start then
Should turn up something like this
-
Looks like it is going to be quite a project. Nice work so far, looking forward to seeing it progress.
-
ahh yes, my all time favourite mech, love it, think i saw 1 on the warehouse thu, but looking good so far is right, keep us up to date with this 1

THx
It is gonna be quite a project indeed
Hoped to get it done without using Artisan. Not beacause not liking Artisan/SS (loving it!) but because the models exists of alot of fases and vertexes if modeled in full detail, it will turn out very complex all together.
In this I hoped 'Round corners' would help me out if I kept it al in quads.Yesteday thought it all through and realised SS-ing couldn't be avoided if I want it to render real nice.
'Just' have to think of some solutions and explore new techniques that are out there.

True, and it's not even that bad of a model the man build!
But I'm confinced I can do betterIf all else fails, I'll just buy the figurine for a mere β¬500,-

holy shit, 500 yoyos, now thats expensive, have you a link to this model?
-
Big bucks for a Big Rex

bigger than i taught but i dont get it, 500 yoyos is far to much
-
Way to deep for my pockets too, but in figurine-world, the prices are all absurd.
But, in this absurd world, this 500 is quite a good price, seeing the sice and options for more stances and quality (3A is one of the best producers).Thank god for SU

May consider this before buying, and the self achivement of DIY

Wow, I just figured out how much 500 euros is!! For that price I hope it's at least made of metal. It would definitely be cool to have one tho. Wonder if you could add servos and whatnot and have it mow the lawn or something.
Your model is looking good

Maybe you should model this so you can have each section 3D printed sh00ks, its looking good from what i see

Thx!
If it could mow the lawn, do the dishes, etc. I would pay way more then those 500

I was thinking about that too, but don't know anything about it's possibilities and prices/quality.
Also don't know how I have to model exactly to get a good result/product.But it sure is an intersting follow up of a good sketch

Progress
After making the head in full detail, to confince myself I can do this, I started to make the whole model in rough shapes that represent the outlining of the model.
This way I could get a good grip on the sizes and shapes of all the parts, cause that is some tough cooky when you have limited pictures of limited angles...
Also discoverd loads of movable parts and joints and realised that the shapes of adjoining parts is critical to prevent overlapping parts when moving the parts.
Since the goal is to make it a full detailed model, the parts have to be able to move like their supposed to.So it took me a sweet amount of hours to get it right, but I think I got it.
All together, it turns out like this
I would appreciate your input, mainly on the proportians of the parts and it relationships
Next up is fine detailing all the parts.

This is great, it was only last wk I found myself with the rerelease box set for metal gear solid in hand, taught of this post as the mech is proberly the best ever created for gaming, only shame is you never get to take control, I see from the bottom image you have it rigged, even better, would like to see an animation of the finished product with key frame animation of even SP where controllers are added so finally we get control of this beast, well done, keep it up

I hope I can make it 'dynamic', cause I know nothing about these techniques and how to do it.
When that time arrives, I'll have to dive into itBtw: You CAN control Metal Gear Rex in MGS4: Guns of the Patriot, Act 3 Realy cool to see how it all moves and work!

That I didn't know, unfortunately I don't have a ps3 and my understanding is it was only a ps3 game, would I be right in saying it was never released for Xbox or pc?
