Showing text when moving mouse over object?
-
hello,
i was wondering if there is a way (or a plugin) to show text when moving the mouse over een object(group, component). i work in a museum and using SU pro 8 making drawings of the different exhibition spaces. It would be nice when titles appear when you hover over an object.
best regards

This is a nice idea. You mean the Entities windows Names? I hover and look at the window.I am modelling winery tanks in a cellar. They all have names. Actually I would like a nice label that hovers over each of the tanks--and can be turned off. Either this would just be in plan view--or it could be made to work somehow with the current camera. At present I have text callouts made with the text tool, which gives the tank's name. But I don't like how the text tool with arrow looks. Usually squirrelly. If I put all this text on different layer--for working it's OK. Not nice for client presentation. It follows the tank around BTW.
Would be nice to have a label tool in LayOut that could put certain component names up as in Facebook photos...

You can turn off the arrows and leaders for
Sketchup::Text
callouts, by chosing Leader = Hidden inEntity Info dialog.Or to set multiple Text objects, select the ones you wish to change, then open the Model Info dialog, go to the Text panel, set the Leader control to Hidden, then click the Update selected text button.
If you wish to update ALL leaders, then first click the Select all leader text button, in the Model Info dialog, Text panel. Then set the Leader control to Hidden, and lastly click the Update selected text button.

Thanks Dan. I'll see how that works...
Some useful things there. Since I rarely use text in SU I overlooked all this. One thing is missing is the third choice for the leader in the Model Info box. I can only select the text one at a time to make the leader hidden. A little awkward.

Hi Tig, Dan, Pbacot and others,
Thanx for the replies.
I will experience one and another. What i try to reach is making walkthroughs in exhibibition spaces and having texts apperear about the different artworks that pass by during the trip. Maybe i have to include different scenes where texts appear and disappear, the way Pbacot describes. What do you think?
Sorry Tig, i realized that i should post this question in the Plugin department, instead of SU wishes. Thanx for merging them.
Anyway, this is a great site, professional people, great help!

OH, sorry, that is UI bug. (I'll check to be sure it is logged.)
Instead use the Entity Info inspector:
Hold down the CTRL key to select multiple text objects, then change the Leader property for all those selected, in one step, in the Entity Info inspector.
(You can still use the Model Info "Select all leader text" button to select all in the model, whether on screen, or not.) -
Thanks Dan. I looked in the contextual menu. Didn't think to look in the entity window. There are at least three ways to do things in SU it seems!
I think I can do what I want within SU, at least, if not LO. In plan the name of the tanks will clearly sit over the model and move around with it as the winery is arranged. The name can be positioned so that it appears to hover above the tank in other views. and not whip around with the leader all the time ( I think). I can place it on another layer if I only want it showing sometimes.
