Gizmo and Wii Remote for SketchUp navigation!
-
Hi Guys,
I came across a project that the College of Architecture and Urban Planning University of Washington are working on that may be of interest to anyone that is looking for a remote way of navigating SketchUp models.
I am particulary interested in the WiiView system using a Wii Remote as I see these devices are available on the Net for under $15!
You can check out details here, http://depts.washington.edu/dmgtui/index.html

I'm surprised there are no comments on this possibility. I could see it being very useful for presenting models, say projected on screen from a laptop while the presenter stands / walks / talks about the presentation! The viewers / audience could actually navigate to various parts of the models that they are interested in for focused discussion
Anyway, I've ordered a Wii Remote (Black) for $14 and will report back probably via my next CATCH 'Useful App / Gadget' article. BTW, I am getting great use from Pixeet which appeared as my last 'Useful App' in CATCHUP 11.

Mike, you posted this today and it's Sunday and it's Summer already (at least "up-above" here). How to expect a hot discussion within 10 hours in these circumstances?
-
I think also the problem can lie here -
Software Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 SketchUp 6
I'm interested... but... not being a max user..

I have a suggestion for new boss . It would be a good move to make special SketchUp remote and sell it in packet with SU Pro. There should be shortcuts for most used plugins ...and plugin creators could be paid a percent according to how many times their button was pressed ....hmm I already see them pressing it whole day. A new kind of job...

This looks great and i was going to download it for my MA presentation until i got to the download page.
-
Download WiiView.mpkg.zip.
-
Just uncompress it, and you will get WiiView.mpkg.
-
Launch WiiView.mpkg, and follow the instrucion.
-
Then, Open your SketchUp 6, find the โWii Viewโ under the โtoolsโ menu, execute it! There should be a window โhelper1โ popping up. Meanwhile, please press the Button 1 and 2 simultaneously. (You also can find the Wii View icon by customize the tool bar.)
Not sure if it will work in SU 8

Most likely it will. Shouldn't be anything in SU8 that isn't in SU6. Just try it.

Heres an example of 3D scanning with the kinect sensor, again it retails just under 150 yo yos, thats cheap 3D scanning

Don't be surprised Mike, iv mentioned wii remotes and microsofts kinetc as useful tools for SU and no 1 showed interest, I even had ideas where it would work, I once hacked my wii remote and created a vurtual window on my laptop, where ever I moved in the room the laptop screen gave the illusion I was looking tru a window instead of a flat screen, and I'd I moved towards the laptop I would see more like you would if you moved closer to the window, even a kinect can do 3D scanning, a Kinect retails at โฌ150 if not cheaper now, very affordable 3D scanner if you ask me, there are endless possibilities for these devices if employed into SU, iv many ideas and to be honest, this feature you have displayed here, I know a better system which would work using the wii remote, 2 LEDs, and a cheap pair of glasses frames, and your head becomes the remote instead of your hand.
Heres a link that will explain how its done and if you follow the link in the description you can do this yourself and see how effective it is yourself [flash=600,370:2qqqunag]http://www.youtube.com/v/Jd3-eiid-Uw[/flash:2qqqunag]
Also iv seen this employed using sketchyphysics, cant seem to find the demo of it anymore but it works, and this is a usful tool also, and there are many other ways this could be used with SU, Think about it and let your imagination run wild, im sure you can come up with ideas using this with SU that i havent [flash=600,370:2qqqunag]http://www.youtube.com/v/5s5EvhHy7eQ[/flash:2qqqunag]

Is anyone even taking this serious, look at the whiteboard you can make, this has huge possibilites in SU, HUGE I TELL YE
-
Hi folks.
I am interested in all kind of possible remote interactions with SU. Being able to manipulate a model or even to do modeling at a distance from the computer would be awesome for presentations. Just being able to pan, rotate and zoom would be great.
BTW, last sunday was a holiday for the province of Quebec, which means that I was away from computers for 3 days since June 24th holiday gave me monday off for a 3 days weekend. And, best of all, next weekend is a repeat since sunday July 1st is Canada day.

Being able to manipulate a model or even to do modeling at a distance from the computer would be awesome not only for presentations, but for ones health. Imagine modeling in sketchup as in Wii sports! No more seating...exercise.

Now it's me that is feet dragging
