Storyboarding

Dear All,
I was working on a film project last year, designing sets etc but I was asked to do some storyboarding for one of the directors. I did it and everyone was happy but I'm sure I did it the long way round and I'm just playing with the concept again now. I'm having a brain freeze but if I wanted to take a scene say on a rooftop with 2 characters and then wanted to add a new scene where a 3rd character comes into the shot, every time I add the new scene, everything updates on the previous scenes i.e. there were 2 characters in scene 1 but when I add a 3rd character in scene 2, he then appears in scene 1! How do I stop this happening and keep each scene as separate entities? Thanks in advance!!

The characters need to be on different layers. So let's say for Scene 1 you have Character A and B. In Scene 2 Character C shows up. In Scene 3, Character A leaves. Make 3 layers, one for each character (A, B and C) and associate the layers with the corresponding character components. Set up Scene 1 with layers A and B turned on but layer C turned off. Create (or update) Scene 1. Set up Scene 2 and turn on layer C. Create Scene 2. Set up Scene 3 turning off layer A. Create Scene 3. Now when you switch between scenes you'll have your characters showing as needed.
Remember, your scenes are like live camera views of the model space. They show the current state of the model at all times. If you move a component from one point to another, it'll be moved in all the scenes. Layers allow you to hide or show various components and thus control what is seen or not in a given scene.

Thanks Dave R. I thought that might be a solution - I would have to try it - it might get a little confusing if character or Layer A reappeared in different scenes & different areas? I was wondering also if, say, the storyboard required 12 scenes, whether I could "save a copy as" versions 1 to 12 also?

I'd have to double check but I thought:
When you are on scene two and hide a component, go to scene one and unhide it. When you go back to scene two it'll go hidden again?
I'm gonna try now..*EDIT FOR SECOND TIME * Yep I just got that to work. Unhide one one scene, update it. By default it will save your hidden geometry settings

Layer visibility state is one of the things that can be saved (and typically is) as part of the scene parameters.
Bowsey, you could save your 12 scenes using File>Save as... but then changes you make to the model have to be manually propagated throughout. So suppose you decide to add a parked car in your scenes. You'd have to go through all 12 SketchUp files and add the car. I think that would be a pain in the posterior.
Here's another thing you might think about. if you want Character A to show up in different places in the same room, make copies of the character (Character A1, Character A2, Character A3, etc.) and assign a different layer to each copy. You can then show that character moving around the space as needed. It's similar to the way i created this animation. In this example, things like the needle, the fabric and the dog are copies of the same component on different layers. In each scene a different set of layers are visible.
