[$]SketchUp Guide for Woodworkers--The Basics
-
Dave Richards(DaveR) has released a great video for both Woodworkers and new users to help get to grips with SketchUp.
This DVD/video download, running over an hour, covers the basics of getting started in SketchUp without getting bogged down in too many details.
It'll help you get started with SketchUp:
- Take you through sketching out an idea
- Fleshing it out to add details
- Create some plans you can take to the shop to build the project.
There are a number of resources on the disk including a SketchUp file of the cabinet used in the video, plans for the cabinet and a cheat sheet you can keep handy as you're getting familiar with the program.
If you're a newer user of SketchUp, this video is for you. -
A question for Dave R:
I was checking out your video at the Fine Woodworking site and there was a 'New' badge attached to it? Has it been recently revised from the 2013 version, or is it the option for download that's new?
You may have seen my post yesterday to David H. regarding his book β I'm gathering materials for an advanced furniture maker friend who is just jumping into SU and I want to help him navigate the learning curve.
I had meant to ask you whether there's much on the video that would now be outdated because of SU version changes (for example, inferencing)? But if there's been a revision, then no issues.

I'm not sure why it's got a "New" badge. I haven't updated it yet although we're discussing it. The basics of modeling in SketchUp haven't changed so I think the video would still be suitable for getting a beginner going.
If your friend is interested in some one-on-one training, you could put him in contact with me. I can do that sort of stuff online.

Curious. (the 'New' badge) ...Especially since it still references Google Sketchup
I'll ask him about the one-on-one training and if he's interested I'll put him in touch.
Thanks Dave.

I tried multiple times to get them to get rid of the Google name. They did in some places. Part of the idea of updating the basics is to get rid of it once and for all.
I'll be around.
