Card models from Sketchup
-
Hi All,
I have been scouring the forum for information on the best un-fold program to create paper models. I have tried Waybe ( cant get it to work) Flattery (crashes my computer) I am reluctant to fork out $38 bucks on pepakura. Unfold is nice and simple but doesnt add tags. I would be interetsed to hear the work flow from other architects on how they produce quick cardboard architectural models from their skp models.

I guess I am the only Architect here building cardboard design models.

Hi, SEKTA:
You are not the only. However, you may be the only one in this forum doing it in conjunction with Sketchup. I don't think $38 is too much for pepakura, if you plan to use it long term, and-- if it solves your particular problem. I do not use it, but so what? I actually saw your post before this, but assumed that someone would pipe up sooner or later. Let's give them a little longer to respond. -
Sekta, I enjoyed making card models some years ago and have often thought about making the odd one from time to time to keep my hand in.
I think you have listed the available popular apps, however I did a quick search around and found this,
SCALE MODELERS HANDBOOK
http://www.scale-modelers-handbook.com/card-modeling.html
http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/model-builder.htmlI did not delve into the site too deeply as the available apps were Win but I might have a further look around when time permits.
I would be most interested in seeing some of your models and I imagine others would be of the same view.

I've made a few card models starting with SketchUp. JF Unfold works fine for me and adding the tabs manually isn't a big problem. Sometimes I just add them when I'm cutting the model out. There is a plugin that will create tabs. I used to have it but can't find it now. I'll try to locate it.
Here's an example of a building I did using Unfold. This one is scaled to print at 1:160 for the N-scale model railroad we're working on here. I only have this image available at the moment.
The model was found on the 3DWH.

hey thanks guys, I knew that last comment would flush some of you out. My practice is only small but we are starting to JV with larger practices on larger work. I have always relied on my SKP model to convey to my clients the design intent however, lately where we have been working in a D&C procurement with a builder, they have shown me up several times in front of my client. I turn up with my ipad and my images from my SKP model, the dam builder turns up with a physical model complete with crane etc etc. Needless to say, my client just loves it when the builder pulls the roof off exposing the interior layout of the project complete with people to give an idea of scale.
I havent built a model since my university days but recently when I was in the main foyer of a large architectural practice in Auckland they had on display a number of beautfil simple design models, very simple but elegant. Thats when I thought I really have to start seriously looking at how I can leverage off my quite detailed SKP models to build a physical model and put the builders back in there place.
I had a further play around with the unfold tool today. Its not bad, very simple and allows you to place tabs. The idea is to set the templates up in LO and print onto a heavy weight card. I will let you know how I get on and that for the responses, much appreciated.

Sekta, how did you get on with Unfold? I was going to use Flattery but wondered if you'd made anything up yet?
