Sketchy +WINE--A question about feasibility

Hey there, can anyone give me some advice on whether or not SU 7.1 will work, and if it does, how well it will work in WINE for linux. I recently went over to a dual boot system, because I was tired of Windoze shenanigans, and currently us Windoze ONLY for Sketchup, and listening to music. I would love to be able to do my modeling and rendering under WINE so as to avoid more of the Windoze follies that I have grown to hate so much.

Maybe upgrading to both Windoze 7 and SU 8 will help, you would'nt need all that wine.

Did you try the "winetricks" application? It come with installers specifically for SU 7 and Su 8. That said, there are many issues with various graphics cards, so wine and graphic applications don't work well on all machines. I also had issues with getting some of the rubies to work. That was the point at which I gave up on it. Was just a thing to play with so wasn't really critical for me to have it work.

If your SketchUp works fine on Windows XP, then that's good and I would keep it until you are sure that you are happy with how SketchUp works in Wine. I've heard very many different opinions (from simple 'it works' to unbearable), but in general it works almost flawlessly (depending on your workflow you might miss the funny sketchy styles, image export, thumbnails).
If you have already [whatever Linux], the best is to just try it out.

You need: a graphics chip/ graphics card with hardware acceleration (it runs only accelerated) and a recent version of Wine (1.2.3 stable or later, for example the Ubuntu Software Center offers 1.3.28 beta).

Upgrading to either one isn't going to happen anytime soon. Can't afford Win 7, and can't stomach SU8. Hopefully SU9 will be better, but that's most likely still a year or two out.
Truth be told, I don't care for any windows product, but I still need it for now, while I am learning Linux and gradually transferring everything over to it.

Hi to all

google sketchup 8 and wine 1.3 is no go for me on kubuntu 11.10 with ati card hd6370 and proprietary driver. however, it runs fine, only the drawing area is messy

on winehq they have platinium and garbage results on su 8 and wine 1.3.29

Hi,
the garbage/silver/gold/platinum ratings are very superficial and subjective, depending of how much people test in that application (some rate it gold when they see all buttons, without trying if the buttons work).

I believe it is not Wine's fault because it is running fine on my computer (except of software rendering and some other things). Your hd6370 is very new! Although the manufacturer ATI offers Linux drivers for its product, those drivers don't support all functions of the product that you paid for, they will be added from time to time. One year ago I had problems with SketchUp on an hd5570 until I did the first driver update.

So I would recommend to try a driver update.

Most opensource 3d software do not show any such dispay issues. My assumption is that they avoid OpenGL functions that aren't well supported.

thanks Aerilius! I have uninstalled ati proprietary fglrx and now I'm using open radeon driver and Sketchup+Wine works fine.
