It is possible to position textures of grouped objects?
-
Is this possible or do you always have to ungroup the objects first?
-
No, you can only position texture on single faces. I.e. no group, no component, not even a curved (and smooth) surface.
You do not need to explode ("ungroup") it however. If you edit the group (right click > edit OR simply double click), you get into its editing context and can access the "bare" geometry - and on the individual faces, the texture positioning tools.

Thx, that's good to know. There's no plugin that can do this either I suppose.

Why would you need a plugin to do something simple like open a group for editing and apply the materials?

However there is a way to control the positioning of a material that you painted "from outside" onto the group. This technique is especially useful if you want to texture several instances of the same component with different materials (different wood etc.).
(I think there was a tutorial on SketchUpdate, but I can't find it anymore)When you open the group, the faces inside have the default material which is similar to a plain color (except that it shades backfaces blueish). Because of this, the faces have no texture coordinates.
Paint the faces inside the group with one textured material and position it as you want.
Then select all faces and click in Entity Info on the material chooser. Choose the default material again. The faces will now retain there texture coordinates although they have no textured material (if you paint the default material with the paint bucket, it removes the texture coordinates).
Now close the group, create copies of it and paint each from outside with another textured material. -
I have to try this, Aerilius, thanks for the tip (never heard of it before I have to admit).
