The apseI spent my layoff time designing a Gothic cathedral because I read Ken Follet's "Pillars of the Earth". So here is a preview and the other 80+ renderings are at the picasa site:https://picasaweb.google.com/103014864480561473398 and the model (70MB) is available for download from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40864073/8%20Gothic%20Cathedral%20clean.skp and anyone is welcome to "remodel" it to their heart's content and improve on it; just keep me in the loop for fun. I want to see what others will do with it.
The model is loosely based on the Chartres cathedral with elements taken from many other 11-12 & 1300's cathedrals. Rendering done with Kerkythea and a lot of patience. I had to gut the interior just to render the exterior and vice-versa.
Using a Precision 4500 4GB ram 2.93 gig processor and quadro (xx) graphics card.

Probably my favourite ever book! Love it. Did you catch the TV series?

You have a cool model there too, looks like a real labour of love.

However..,. If you remember the end, they designed a flat (i.e. not octagonal) closing of the sanctuary so that there could be stained glass windows installed there (and this could be an "explanation" for that special, English Gothic sanctuary type).

Chartres is very French. Ken Follet's cathedral would be particularly English.

Lee, I am disappointed. While the book may be an interesting and easy read (in the mornings sitting on the loo), it is rather a big garbage. Come on, English people eating turkeyat Christmas? Who the hell is this writer? (The TV series are just on here - well, should I comment?)

@klog: the model/render and all the elaborate things are truly amazing so please, forgive my rants above...

                        For everyone:
Here are two more Drop Box links for interior only
                        http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40864073/small8%20Gothic%20nave%20and%20choir.skp
and the whole cathedral without materials (about 5.5MB)
                        http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40864073/8%20Gothic%20Cathedral.skp
Maybe this will make it more available to all and get more great renderings and ideas going.
