SU to Lightwave3D
-
Hi Guys. Is anyone currently using SU and Lightwave3D in their workflow? ie. modelling in SU, and rendering/animating in Lightwave?
My current workflow is SU to 3dsMAX, exporting from SU as a .3ds file, complete with materials etc. This works perfectly. Is the route from SU to Lightwave just as straightforward ?
Any insights or experiences would be much appreciated.
thanks
Andy.

Hi Andy,
I used lightwave and sketchup several years ago, I believe it was lw ver. 8. To exchange data, I exported 3ds, and imported into modeler. No problems at all. Materials and uv mapping came in ok, all in one mesh. I only needed to weld vertices together (w key i believe) after importing.
I tried obj at the time, but had better luck with 3ds. I don´t know if lightwave receives fbx now, i believe that is a better file format for exchanging meshes.

When exporting 3ds to LightWave I always export in meters. Then you don't need to do any any scaling (or rotation) in LW.
I usually export selection only.
When there are changes in the SU model I just copy the new version into a new layer in LW, and all old materials that have been tweaked in LW are inherited automatically.
I always import 3ds into LW Modeler, and not Layout.
Most of the time SU->LW is quite trouble-free
There is also a LW exporter plugin for SU, but because it always exports everything in the skp model I don't use it.
