Custom toolbar changes not being saved on Mac

Friends,
if I customize the toolbar, most of the icons are gone when I open SketchUP the next time.
Did anyone else observe this strange behavior?
Is there any way to make the changes permanent?SketchUp 8 on Mac OS X 10.6.6

When you open sketchup the custom tool bars aren't there. Now open a new file and they should be there. Now open the file you want to work on and close the new file you made.

Unfortunately the trick does not work in Mac OS X
Does any one else has a suggestion?

Oh ya sorry I forgot to mention that you need to save the toolbars as your default temple.
