Question about layers and hidden models
-
Hi,
I'm having difficulty with layers, and I will try to explain what is going on. I have a group assigned to a 2D layer and a group assigned to a 3D layer. The 2D layer group is parallel projection top view and I have the 3D layer(perspective view) turned off in the 2D scene. The 3D layer is drawn right on top of the 2D floor plan. When I hit the 3D scene, I have the 3D layer turned on and the 2D layer turned off. This works great. I have many different layers all in the same building location, and all assigned to scenes on or off, so I can easily switch between. The problem I am having is that if I want to copy the 2D layer floor plan, explode it and bring it in to the 3D layer, although I have exploded the model and is outside the assigned 2D group, I copy and paste in my 3D group, it still remembers it's ancestry or something, for it opens up in the 3D model, only hidden along with the hidden 2D view. This has caused no end of grief and has even forced me to start over again with a new SU file, because I couldn't unassign those sets of line work to be in something else without it appearing hidden. Is there something besides explode that would bring this line work back to a fresh start. Can any one explain what is going on with this..much appreciated..Keea

If I understand your description properly, you need to make a new layer assignment to the copy of the group prior to exploding it. Then the geometry will be on that layer. I would consider making a temporary layer for that sort of thing or assigning Layer 0 as the layer for the copy so the geometry ends up back on Layer 0 after exploding the group.
It does seem to me that when exploding a group or component the geometry should still be on Layer 0 where it was supposed to be left when you made the group in the first place. I don't care for the current behavior.

HI,
Yes, I tried that and it wouldn't work. My exploded lines came back half hidden. I don't understand what is going on with this issue, but is strange to be so locked into a layer once you commit to it. Does anyone have any advice?

So for anyone that might come along with a similar problem, the upshot is that some of the entities within the group were on a layer other than Layer 0. When the copy of the whole group was associated with a different layer, some of the internal entities remained on the other layer. When the other layer was made invisible, those entities disappeared. The solution is to restore all the entities within the group to Layer 0. Only the group was given a different layer association and all is right with the world.

Thanks so much Dave,
That did the trick....Keea

There is a very annoying "feature" in SU (I would rather call it a bug): when you explode a group/component which is on layer x, no matter on what layer the loose geometry inside is (or what your active layer is), it will be moved on the original layer of the group/component.
Now there are a couple of workarounds:
- Move the group/component onto Layer 0 prior to exploding
- After exploding (and while everything is still selected), move the selection (all loose geometry) onto Layer 0
- Use TIG's "Default Layer Geometry" plugin regularly.

I'd forgotten about that plugin. thanks for reminding me. I think a keyboard shortcut for that would be a handy thing.
