Hopper Dredger "Crane"
-
Thanks, Sketchup is by far the fastest at applying textures than any other modeling program i have ever seen, although this did take a while as there are 201 materials on the bridge alone
More details added on the bridge and a new helm modeled. Almost done here I guess, will still need to polish some areas and add some of the chairs, oh and all the fittings that sit on the ceiling.Just noticed my reflection in one of the textures...Noob!

Chairs in and fine textures seperated, although you cannot see it all the textures that will need to retain resolution in bake have been seperated so that when it comes to baking it will have its own texture and you will (hopefully) still be able to read everything written on the instruments.
Heres a photo of the real interior vs the current model ( I didnt quite get the angle on this render but ill get it when everything has been added :

Wow, amazing.
Maybe in the future we will have live tracking of ships via GPS so we can watch your ship models moving on Google Earth.
Not Google Earth, but....
-
amazing - thanks for taking time to explain
-
Well here is a shot of the final lighting setup, the rudder indicator is missing here but it is modeled, had to create a special texture for it, was quite a challange, ill get a post up for it soon
-
And heres the Final product in game : (Still need to add the instruments)
-
Getting there...Still need to render the new texture for the Wheel and get the throttles in,oh and of course the doors. But after adding the working bits and our renowned skipper,I thought Id show and tell.
-
Looks great!
-
Thanks Jason, And heres another Angle with the new helm and doors :

This is awesome work. You may have answered this before but I'm new - so what game is this in?

Thanks Bupaje, heres the link :

Work on the Model has finally begun,I decided on a scale of 1:40 which brings her overall length to 1.33m. The Hull Blueprints which where made in Sketchup from the Original Drawings, where printed onto a A0 page and Stuck onto a 1.8m x 1.0m .6mm Sheet of Plywood using woodglue, and then painfully cut out using a jigsaw cutter :
This is the same process when making a ship in sketchup, and its just as much fun! ....although the copy and paste buttons are disabled in real life.
-
Ooh. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
-
wow a true modelling fanatic!
beware: in real life, another tool that doesn't work is Ctrl+Z!are you modelling for fun?

Thanks Guys, designerstuart Im building in for remote control will be one of the Durban remote control club additions

Warning the next content of "Hopper Dredger "Crane" might make you feel like a crappy modeler, continue at own risk.
hehe, Awesome work. ^^

Well after sitting 2 weeks without nails I finally got some, they are special brass artisania nails and there where none in the country!
So work on the Real models continues, I have the motor, coupling and shaft ready but its still some time before those go in, the hull is still being prepared for filling, which will be followed by a few layers of resin, then of to fiberglassing she goes, then everything you see in these pics will be destroyed -
Wait. You've made other real life models and haven't shown us?!
-
Thanks BryanK,
Yup the other where not involved in Sketchup so not really relevant for this forum
First Layer of Filler applied and sanded, stil have lots more sanding to do,only have 2mm balsa planks so have to be carefull when sanding with a machine to not go to far, tricky areas get sanded by hand.
Designed the hopper and made it from 1.5mm Styrene, still working on the supports but I think this Idea will pass, once the hopper is filled you will be able to lift it out and dump the contents, unlike the real ship that has hopper gates on the bottom, my hopper is 20mm from the bottom, also after doing some calculations im going to oversize the grab abit , it should take about 50 full scoops to fill the hopper. -
The hull is just a plug ready for fiberglassing, my contact who used to do the fiberglassing for me is MIA so Ill have to find someone else to make the mould.
The real ship has Hopper gates that dump the sand at the dump sites, my model will see the entire Hopper come out manually and dump by hand I wasnt about to try making those 16 hopper gates work.
Note this is my first scratch build and only my second scale model, and my first time using Styrene, but im loving it and styrene with claritie glue is definatly the only way to go, such a pleasure to work with.
The first pic shows the prints in scale made in scetchup from the model. All the smaller details dont get printed as I just take the measurements from Sketchup directly.
