SKB icons (Windows XP)
-
How do you get rid of the thumbnail for SKB files? Years ago the skb (autosave) files had a generic icon, but now they have a thumbnail, just like skp files. This is a problem when I look quickly and confuse them with a recent model. Recently I mistakenly sent a skb to a client, thinking it was the skp I had worked on.
I tried changing the icon in Window's File Types, but it did not do it.
Actually, this is specifically a Windows XP question.

I doubt you can get rid of them if you're in the Thumbnail view. The icons are generic if you are in another view such as Details. You could adjust the sort order so the SKB files are separate from the SKP files. Why not just delete the SKB files. You don't really need them after you've successfully saved the file you're working on. About once a week I do a Find Files and search my computer for *.skb. then I delete everything that turns up.

Well, that's a good idea! I just checked. I've got 100 skb files, just sitting there, taking up space.

It'll be like getting a new computer when you get rid of them.

Run Regedit
Find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes.skb
and delete this entry, this don´t interfere with the .skp thumbs, so if you rename the .skb to .skp the thumbnail will appear normally. -
Yes! Regedit did the trick. Thanks - Joel

Just wait till your system crashes, and the .skp has not been updated since you opened the file, 1,000 commands ago. The space for a back up is nothing in light of typical drive sizes.

Of course if the SKP and SKB files are on the same hard drive and you can't access the SKP, you probably won't be able to access the SKB either. Better to just make a back up on a separate drive or other media.
