Deleting a face?
-
Hi Tim (and welcome),
"Excess" would be anything that is not needed. Here is an example: just delete whatever is coloured as red (or even better; upload your own file and we can give the example on that).

That is exactly my problem it seems, I watched the tutorials but I'm unable to delete that face without compromising the inside of the tube I cut. As I said it seems to be obvious to everyone but me as to how this face is removed but I can't seem to grasp it...

Click once on the face itself to select it.
Don't double click because that will select the edges of the face also.
The face itself should get little blue spots all over it but the edges should remain black.
Then right click on the face and select erase, or just hit delete on your keyboard.

Thanks a ton, as I said I was pretty sure it was simple. On a related and even more frustrating note, I was able to delete the face on the "needle" that was posted earlier, but upon trying it in my own creations I found that it won't work for me. Any idea why that may be? I select and delete the round cover, but the face is still there and I can't re-select anything in the circle. If I hit delete again it deletes the whole face.

Tim, please, attach your skp file as it is hard to imagine what's going on there.

In the first file I've cut everything away from the intersection, and have a circular plane over the hole that I want to be open. In the second I have taken the hole, clicked the circular plane, hit delete, have been left with the entire intersecting plane still covering the hole, and have no way of selecting the circular plane. any help would be appreciated.
First case, circular plane selectable
Second face, circular plane deleted but the intersecting plane interferes

OK, you seem to have ended up with two faces on top of each other. Let's start with your second file where you have already removed the one in the middle. Indeed the issue is that the inner perimeter of that tube does not intersect with the plane. You can get it to intersect however: just re-draw one of the segments of that circle (well ellipse already). Make sure to do it from endpoint to endpoint.
Sometimes SU acts unexpected but there are always ways to fix it.

The intersection isn't complete.
Triple click anywhere on the piece, the whole thing should be shaded blue meaning it's all selected.
Right click on it and select "intersect with selection".
Single click on the oval that is the end of the tube and hit delete.Edit, I was too slow.
