Very good guys, its nice to watch your solutions as chairs with organic shape have also driven me nuts recently.
Ive noticed that your models show a more square shaped behind. In top view it should be more oval, if i interpret the photos right. Maybe try FFD plugin to fix this?
Solo has shown a workflow on another chair here. He modeled polygons and later extruded them with JPP...

I think your interpretation is correct, actually we should ideally always save our base mesh somewhere, so that we could always go back to it when we realize we cannot undo anymore and our surface is already subdivided.

I do not not if there is a plugin allowing to switch between base and subdivided mesh but that would be very cool.

yes the shape is more round on the backside.

how did you model the groundshape? That was my biggest problem.

this week I'm going to buy subdivide and smooth!

            Hi,

I think this tutorial will help you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7sdl-bhlyM, that is the way I did the chair, but that's not the only way, it is also possible to start from a cube or a simple rectangle, find the method you are the most confortable with, and watch a lot of tutorials.

Hi thank you everybody for your help.

This thread is half a year old and a had a lot of practice in the meantime. So I tried again to construct this chair. The result is far away from being perfect but much better then my experiments in june.
