Dimensioning

I having real trouble dimensioning a particular site drawing (too big to post up here unfortunately).

No matter what I try, the dimensions always show Paper Space measurements, I have tried every thing I can think of to change it, but I'm having no luck.

Furthermore, the dimensions always appear behind the actual image.

Any help much appreciated.

have you set the scale for the view?

make sure that your dimension layer is above the object layer in the layer manager.

has the object you're trying to dimension been exploded? or converted to vector?

No scale has been set, it's a perspective view, that I am trying to roughly dimension for a customer. It used to work in LO2.1 without any difficulty.

Not been exploded, just imported a scene from SU.

If they're behind, that means the layer that the model is on is higher in the layer list than the layer that you're currently on and trying to add the dimensions to. Drag the layer containing the model down the list so the dimensions draw on top of the model.

If they're going to paper space instead of connecting to the model, your model could be on a locked layer. You can't inference / connect if something is on a locked layer.

If that doesn't fix your issue, respond back.

Would like to know the answer too.
A client has the same problem. Unfortuntly I can't reproduce it, because it works perfect here.

Meanwhile he found out that it just appears on his own template with the header. On Blank Pages it works for him.

Have you opened up the Window->Dimension Style panel to see what it's set to? We try to make it pretty hard to NOT get model space dimensions. Keep this panel open while you're dimensioning and see what the Auto Scale button does.

You should not dimension on a shared layer.
Make sure your current layer isn't shared.
I can tell there's multiple layers since the dim
is going behind the model.

Hello all,
I would like to know if anyone has the same problem about LayOut 3:
it seems that dimensions are not automatically resized when you resize entities.

Hello Jean-Luc,

I have never had such issues. What entities are you resizing? The SU viewport or some model entities in the SU model itself - in this latter case the LO dimensions may indeed get broken therefore it's not suggested to change too much on the SU model after bringing it into LO and dimensioning it...

Yes, it is totally possible. Only make sure that you do snap to the model and not some grid or other paper element. Moving the viewport around will not move the dimensions away from where you placed them but they should be interactively and dynamically attached to the proper model entities and change (or "stret8ch") as the model changes.

Does it not work for you? I've just tried and it does for me.

Yes, it works now. There are 2 layers: "By default" and "On each layer". It doesn't work on the second layer.

Isn't it "On each page" (not layer)?

But anyway, see I didn't even think of that. But that layer is (mostly) for repetitive elements like title blocks and such.

Beetween the 1.30 and 1.50 minute. They are talking about dimensions which are attached to the model.

A couple of notes on dimensioning / labeling, and connections (things that stick to models or images):

You cannot make a connection where the item your dimensioning / labeling OR the dimension / label is on a shared layer. We found this to be a source of crashes (and those of you who've sent me corrupt files, a lot of times this is what I was fixing in your files, what could have been a result of this).

In LayOut 3, if you do this, save and close your file and open it back up, the connection will be broken. If your dimension is on a shared layer, it will NOT get model space measurements (only paper space measurements) in addition to not sticking to the model.

One of you asked me offline "how do I even get shared layers?" Our templates put them in there, so you can create borders and page stylings on every page. You can also create them by clicking on the icon in the Layers panel that toggles between one piece of paper and a stack of papers (items on this layer on one page OR on every page).

We like to make things simple and subtle, but sometimes the subtlety needs a bit of explanation.
