Does anyone out there know of an easy way to make a surface shaped like ripples in water? I tried using the sandbox and smoove, and I can get a reasonable approximation of what I am looking for, but its not the easiest approach.

        Tried SDS? (subdivide and smooth)

If you are rendering then a displacement map would work great.

Somebody posted a pretty cool example using TT's Bitmap2Mesh plugin.

If I make it look easy...It is probably easy

              That'd be Jeff's post?

But bewarned - it'd probably a very dense mesh.
But didn't Whaat have a polyreducer tool in one of this hits?
Or you can try with a very small heightmap.

Thanks ThomThom, I love the follow me example, I think that is going to work best for what I am trying to accomplish.

Your bitmap to mesh plugin is pretty cool as well, I am going to check that out. It could be useful for renders!

If you just care about this for still renderings, then there was a great Photoshop plugin by flamingpear called flood that does a great job for still images. You have a lot of control over the perspective and type of ripples on the surface.

I believe there is also a script for Gimp called if I remember correctly, Water reflection displacement map generator.
