3D Puzzles

Ran across some neat puzzles and got stuck on the very first one.

The object is to stack the blocks to match the 3 views using the number of blocks given. (Blocks do not need supported.)
This is the first puzzle in SketchUp. I was able to get it down to 14 blocks, but am stumped on how to get it down to 12.

Here's another one I posted a while ago, 'Soma Cube' http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=209665#p209665

I think this is it with 12 - just make sure you only have 1 block in each row/column

I concur - a very clever solution!

Clever indeed, especially considering the simplest solution of starting with a stack 4x4x4 and just eliminating blocks until it matches the views still leaves you with 32 blocks. That's 4 times the minimum, and still leaves a lot of paths to find the correct answer.

You must use 12 blocks because you see 12 in each view!
It's just arranging them at maximum efficiency...
If you can do it with fewer than 12 then you are truly gifted
