7 files to Pro 6

Hi, new to the Forum but thought somebody might answer my question. In AutoCAD you can save a file to a bunch of previous versions of CAD - - everybody doesn't have the latest expensive version - - I have 6Pro on an older machine and just plane old '7' on my newer laptop. I started a project on the laptop and swapped my jump drive to the older machine and tried to open the 7 file in Pro6 - - no go: I had to load the '7' program to get to work. Isn't there a way to save SU files in previous versions? OK, can I upgrade my 6 Pro without paying full bore?
