Massive model problem
-
Hey All,
I have a model which contains a couple of houses, some trees, cars, people etc and it's all built up to be about 70mb of data! I don't know if this is a lot, but now when i try and open the model its just slows the PC down to a near standstill. Here's the exciting bit, I'm trying to open it on a duel quad core PC and its still slow!!!
Is there any way to make this model smaller without destroying it?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Andy

Styles settings can also greatly affect performance.
Performance killers:
Shadows
Edge effects - Profiles, extensions end points etc
Large Textures (Also if you enabled 2048px textures - they are killers as well)Btw, what graphic card do you have? And when did you last update your drivers?
(You have ensured that Hardware Acceleration is on?) -
Thanks Thom, I'm going to try and turn off a few of these features if they are on. I'm currently waiting nearly a minute to hit the file drop down
I'm not sure what the graphics card is in that machine but I know it's pretty good. I will get our IT department to make sure everything is up to date!
Thanks again, I will let you know what happens!

Can you post a screenshot of the model so we have an idea of what it is? There are many things that can affect performance.
Lots of transparency as well.
And what is the model stats? Face, Edge, Group, Component count? -
File size seems vary large, I'm thinking there are some big textures or background images that can be removed or down sampled to a smaller size.
First think to try is to go to the "window" menu at choose "Model Info/Statistics/ purge unused.
This will remove unused materials and components that may be making the file larger.
Is it just slow opening and closing and seems fine while you are using the open file?

Hey all
Really sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I've been offline for a little while.
You guys really helped, we turned a few things off as Thom suggested and turning off unused materials helped alot too! I'm sorry I didn't send over the file, it's a client file and it was best I checked with them first (I still haven't heard back from them) If I can, I will send the unedited model over and let you guys go to work on it
Thank you!
