I understand that the only advantage of a 64-bit architecture is the possibility to address terabytes of memory, so it is understandable that software houses have no hurry to make 64-bit versions of their products. In everyday computing 64-bit is slower than 32-bit, as there is more for the memory management to waste time upon. What advantage do you see?

As to ATI, it is the other way round. Ati should make its drivers more OpenGL-compliant.

I saw a video a while ago (tried to find the link now, but couldn't just yet) about a direct comparison between 3DS Max 32 bit and 64 bit on the same spec machines and using the same model template. 64 bit computing is sooooo much faster!

Software houses should indeed step up and get their software recoded for 64 bit usage as more and more medium to high spec personal machines (with the limit of RAM 32 bit can address) are being sold. I'd say give it another year, maybe two then 4GB of RAM will be standard. 4GB of RAM already exceeds the address capability of 32 bit computing.

I'd also like to see SU scale better to multiple CPU core machines.

I really wish Sketchup would produce a 64-bit version. Especially when it comes to using things like vray to render large scenes when the 32-bit RAM cap comes in to play at 1.5~2.0GB...

Maybe if we ask nicely?

This is a screen grab of a model being rendered with Max and Vray, billions of poly's, modelling in SU (3 instances), Internet open with 7 windows yet and my rig was still running smooth.
