To me it's very interesting. As since the office starting adopting Revit I've been feeling that I need to process these models in 3DsMax instead of SU. SU just can't cope with the Revit models once they reach a certain stage - too big and the model structure is too awkward to deal with.
Then there's the deal with large situation plans where I have a great deal of terrain. I used 3DsMax to generate terrain where SU would choke or simply be too slow. So this plugin is something I want to look into after easter - as it appear to be another incentive to invest in more time with 3DsMax.

Thomas, I have also started using Max a lot more for modeling, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I have been getting more and more environmental study work and SU is just plain useless at anything there except maybe a few scattered buildings as it chokes too fast even the new 7.1 cannot stand up to the most entry level modeller as far as poly's go. I guess I'm weaning off SU with every new project.

Pete, let me know if you get the Itoo pack and how you like it. I've been playing with Groundwiz quite a bit and I like how I can use it with Vray proxies. It's a very powerful scatter tool. Here's a little test scene I did a few weeks ago. It's a single patch of multi length grass that I converted to Vray proxy and then used Groundwiz to distribute and randomize 100K proxy instances onto a plane. I thought it looked pretty convincing.

Adam, that grass looks great. Seeing these vegetation solutions makes me kinda regret buying plant packages from evermotion, but then again I have yet to really incorporate them too much in a project. Regardless, if you know how to use vray proxies, then you can really create some great scenes with high poly vegetation. I have a question for you though...are you creating your proxies and storing them to use in other projects? I was hoping to start doing that for my workflow, but I am having trouble pulling them into other scenese and getting the materials to work out well. I am assuming I will have to export the multi-sub-object material and import that into my other scenes, but I have yet to test that. Have you had any success with that?

Pete...I am sure you are aware of these resources but it doesnt hurt to suggest them in case you dont know about them. Anyways, if you are really starting to get into 3ds max, I would highly recommend lynda.com or digital tutors. They have so much great content that really holds your hand through the learning process of 3d max. You obviously have to pay for a membership, but the amount of content you get (plus all the other programs like photoshop and etc..)seems endless and a bit overwhelming, but totatlly worth the investment. Plus if you have an iphone, they have apps to watch all of the content.

Thomthom, I hear ya....my office is moving to revit too and I finally got them on board with making 3ds max our primary rendering solution...we are not there just yet, but we certainly are working towards a revit to 3ds max workflow. It comforting to know though that there are others out there doing the same thing. Also, not to mention, the 3d world is definatley moving towards realtime rendering and 3ds max seems to be the modeling program at the forefront of that and I cant imageine sketchup keeping pace with that .........unfortunately

                    Steeler,

In order to retain the materials on a Vray proxy, you have to save it in a .max file and then use the Merge to import.

I've actually been demo'ing Vray Scatter and I think I'm going to buy that over Groundwiz. It doesn't have a paint feature, but the scene processing of Scatter is 100x faster.

Autograss is supposed to be good as well, but I think it's really overpriced.

adam, thanks a lot. That makes sense. I am trying to convince my office to get those plugins as well, but vray realtime is at the top of my list. Scatter looks awesome, but the least applicable in my case right now because I dont seem to get scenes that require that much vegetation. Autograss does seem a bit pricy but it certainly would make things a lot easier for many of my scenes. Another cool plugin that chaos group is working on is their own particle system. Check out their home page, because I think anyone can be a beta tester. I am really anxious to see how that pans out because I want to learn real flow, but this may be a nice substitute because real flow is a big undertaking in its own right. Thanks again for the info
