Ordering of layers

How do I do the equivalent of "bring to front" in sketch up. I have a pattern I've drawn on one layer and rectangle with an opening in it on another layer. I want to set things such that you only see the pattern through the opening in the rectangle. Right now the pattern is on top of the rectangle with the opening.
(The pattern is made up of a bunch of rectangles with textures on them.)

you need to physically (or virtually in 3D i guess
) move one thing in front of the other. if they share the exact same space you can't decide which one shows first.
