      Hi,

I'm a 72 hour noob to Sketchup, not to 3D however.

After much pain, I finally managed to texture map a model of a teatable magazine using export as obj, import into uvmapper pro, exporting as obj, then translating it to 3ds format with polytrans and reimporting it to sketchup! (thanks Google for not providing a obj importer with uv support!)

Now as soon as I change the shape of that magazine (mind you not adding/removing any vertices, faces etc.), the UV information is lost. That shouldn't happen.

      Any ideas what's going on?

      Cheers

Hi Balt (and welcome to SCF),

Did you group that teatable magazine (whatever that is) prior to "changing shape" (I would guess that would mainly mean scaling?) Grouping generally involves all the UV info being kept while manipulating the group from "outside" (true that it is rather limited what you can do with it).

Also, generally speaking, UV mapping is one of the weakest point of SU. Have you tried Whaat's UV plugins?
UV Tools 1 "internal" and UV Tools 2 via export/import.

Can you post some screenshots of what happens?

            Hi,

thanks for the prompt replies. The magazine object is grouped. I then select "edit group" and move one side of the magazine down.

Here's what it looks like before:

and here after moving parts of the surface:

Just to prove the point that it's the UV's that get messed up, here are the renders. They're done with materials assigned by the render engine (Maxwell, i.e. the texture loads from within Maxwell, only the UV's assigned by the sketchup material get used):

            After:

            Am I doing something wrong?

            Cheers

Well, to me it seems that you should not even waste your time with UV mapping this in an external application. You could easily apply the material onto a single face whose size is exactly the same as the overall extent of the magazine then make the material "Projected" on that face, sample it and apply the sampled material onto the curved surface of the magazine.

If you upload the model file, (with the image applied on it), I can better demonstrate it with screenshots.

SU does not have UV mapping gizmos like other apps. If you apply a box UV map in Max, then when imported in SU the UV mapping will not behave the same as in Max when you change the mesh.
