All along the watchtower

My favorite song in the world! How amazing that I actually find a render dedicated to it
Seeing this image reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend a few years ago. In the end we seemed to agree that the song was mostly about religion, but the term 'watchtower' and the fact that Hendrix covered it during the Vietnam-war probably contributed to people (us included) taking it more literatelly. Somehow the 'there must be some kind of way out of here' leans on The Animals' 'we gotta get out of this place', adding to the Vnam idea... But this is hardly a music-forum, forgive me...
About the render; what renderer did you use? And what lightsources did you use? (obviously not the moon cos the shadows don't really match)
I love it, inspires me to attempt an oldschool B&W render!

Nice! Now I can finally see the stone! Great job, you might wanna use more rugged stone texture for more of a spooky yet ancient feel. It would be awesome too if you could make the stone on the tower cast shadows too but thats just optionable if your able(look here).
Keep up the good work

@flipya: nothing to apologize about, man. i myself am a musician, a guitar dude specifically, who loves classic rock stuff, altogether with blues and jazz.
as for the rendering, i used vray for sketchup, with the 7am shadow on, together with the bumps. post rendered with photoshop, tweaked the saturation and brightness til i got what i wanted, sharpened a bit to emphasize the textures. then added trees and the full moon background, and finally turning all of it to black and white. that"s it!!
@KXI systems: i'll be trying to add some details to the textures. thanks a lot man!!

I don't agree with your light and shadows (it's off). Look at the arch, you can see shadow on it, why? Study the moon and the angle of the light. From my view there should not be any shadows from tree on the tower, but that's just me. Can anyone else see what I'm talking about?
Besides that overall idea is good, maybe a crow or a bat somewhere could help. -

Besides that overall idea is good, maybe a crow or a bat somewhere could help.I find the angle of the source matches perfectly with the building, I know from personal experience. Its natural, move like in a 10m squared distance and it looks like the moon is fixed. But keep in mind that the moon is far away and just because it looks like its suppose to shine there in real life it isn't, don't believe me? Go to a building with an arc when the moon seems just right and its light is bathed all over the wall, see how from the same angle as the picture its the same?
And delineator one more thing, you might wanna make those trees cast shadows on the wall too. Just to make it more into the eerie theme

Yes the lighting/shadows are off (at least they don't match the moon), but I like the image all the same as it was just for fun and its got a great mood to it

There AREshadows on the wall from the trees...look just above the arch

@cmoreink: thanks for the constructive criticism. it's alright, if you see it that way. Each and everyone has his own view on art. I made this for the sake of fun, just to kill time.
@KXI systems, @d12dozr: thanks man for the suggestions!! it was fun having you and the other guys on this thread giving c&c's, it has helped me alot to be a better 3d visualizer.
i'll be posting a new tower by the 24th or 25th of March, please watch out for it, it'll be an entry for an exterior rendering competition on a certain filipino graphics website.
thanks again guys!! see ya!! -
Ya know, this would be an interesting "Model This" or "Render This" competition based off your favorite song/artist.
I like the look and I can completely hear Hendrix while viewing this.

Hendrix, Hendrix...It's a DYLAN song! Although Dylan himself said that the Hendix version was better than the original...(and I agree with him)
Nice image delineator, only a bit too sharp IMHO. -
No one actually said it was Hendrix who wrote it, massimo.
It was just his version that inspired delineator ( if I am not totally mistaken )
Anyhow, nice image indeed. -
@rick graham: man that would be a great idea, a "model this" competition for each and everyone's favorite song or artist. i'd be willing to join with a new entry, a led zeppelin song perhaps!!! hehe!! let's get it on!!!
@massimo, @numbthumb: yes it was hendrix' version that inspired this work.
guys, rick graham was suggesting to have a competition, "model this" based on your fave artist or song!! that would be fun!! raise your hands for this to push through!!
