Anyone know of a plugin that allows for free-rotating an object around its center point? In other words, an omni-directional rotate?

      Howdy,

If you hit the Ctrl key while rotating, the "up" that is normally used when rotating is ignored - is this what you mean?

      Hi

i think the question is to rotate an object (cube, sphere...) not the view port. ??

I don't remember where I download this plugin, but I change to rotate 45 instead 90 degres. I set keyboard keys to this plugin, it's very useful.

Thanks for the responses so far. Yes, this is NOT a camera-rotation function I'm looking for, it's to manipulate the orientation of an object in space. The best way to describe what I'm looking for is I would like to rotate the object in an almost orbit-like fashion from a central point - an axis-independent rotation. Any ideas???

I don´t know if is what you are looking for but FredoScale plugin has an option called "Box rotation" that perhaps helps you.

Sounds as if he is looking for the sort of tool that is in Solidworks which allows one to manipulate an object with the rotate tool whilst everything else stays still. That is it's a freehand sort of thing, not one where you select an axis of the object and then rotate it about that. I think it would be very handy in SU if it can be done.

Doesn't wikii's tool do this? I forget what its called. Anyone help me out here?

Otherwise it is something I have been considering writing recently, I have some GUI ideas I want to play with and this would be the one to do it on.

wikii's "combin editor" (don't ask me?) is a gizmo that is limited to axis rotation, scale move...
i think it would be great if you developed along these lines Chris.

Like xrok1 said, looks like wikii's tool isn't quite there. Oh well, guess it doesn't exist...YET! Chris, I'm anxious to see what you can come up with in your development of this tool.

Er, wait... is this a request for a "gizmo" to move, rotate, or scale (around object center or object origin)?

                        Something like this:

                        http://wiki.blender.org/uploads/6/6c/Manual-Manipulators-Combo.jpg

That would be fantastic to have! (even better, snap it to the current model unit... then you can do precise movements without having to post-enter VCB units every time)

                        Reference link to wikki's plugin:

I created the gizmo model for an external editor using SketchUp [see file attachment]
