      The classic problem with the follow me tool is that it rotates the profile shape when its moved along 3d paths making it hard to do banisters and such (without using plugins, of course.)

      I was thinking it would be cool if you could 'lock' the direction of the profile by holding down keys. For example:
      shift = z lock
      ctrl = y lock
      alt = x lock

      So to go back to the banister example, youd hold shift to lock the profile in the z direction.
