Box modeling with SU
-
Seems curious because SU is typically a "box modeling" prog
Have you an image of what do you want? -
Well, when I say "box modeling" - I draw a cube and divide it into even segments (just like in 3d max), and I don't mean draw each line and each int. (that would be a time killer). Once you have your cube divided into nice even faces you start to pull, extrude, etc. on edges and vertices to obtain a primitive shape.
Just look for tuts on "box modeling for 3d max" and you will know what I mean. -
Yes, it is possible pretty much. I would dare say it is not the normal workflow for most people. But if you do want use a box modeling texhnique, you will need to look at the sub division plugins, I think subdivide and smooth is the one you would want.
Solo uses this technique in his work I know.

oh yeah, and one thing is that in SU it creates internal faces, unlike box modeling in 3dsmax. So it will require deleting internal faces.
-
I do indeed, and yes it's called subdivision modeling I believe.

Box modeling is a term that is more widely used in subdivision modelers that rely on primitives as their base. If you watch a tutorial on box modeling for Max, Maya, C4D etc...the principles used don't really apply to SU.
To me, SU is a different kind of program. It is closer to a 3D drawing (CAD) program than a traditional modeling program. Thinking of Sketchup as more of a drafting in three dimensions program, than a taking a box and working it into a shape program, will help the overall functionality become more logical.
Just pick up the pencil and draw!
EDIT - Man....I think Me, Chris and Solo had the same thought at the same time.

thanks guys

Syntax is sometime variable Surface subdivision...organic modeling...as you want...
So here that you want in SU at Smustard Subdivide and Smooth by Dale Martens (22$)
(or very more basic but free: Subdivide by Rick Wilson always at Smustard[flash=425,344:oqtivfem]http://www.youtube.com/v/5LcLPPz0fWM&hl=fr_FR&fs=1[/flash:oqtivfem]
