Problems With .3DS Files In SU?
-
Hi,
I have a huge (70mb) .max of a city that I want to import into SU so I can add sections, put my building on etc. However when I import it as a .3ds some bits appear to be missing - the most important the ground!
Has anyone else had problems or ways I can over come it?
Thanks

Sounds like a scaling issue, make sure your .3ds units and your SU units are the same.

What program was the .3ds file created with?

.3ds has a limited number of polygons that can be within any one file. If your scene is more, which it sounds like it is, then Max will still save to .3ds, but will omit all the geometry over the max. You can try to remove any turbosmooth or meshsmooth modifiers you have for the terrain and see if that helps. You could then do the smoothing in SU if you have the Subdivide and Smooth plugin. The other option is to export the model in sections and then import the city and terrain separately.
You could also use the "Optimize" modifier to reduce the polycount of the terrain.

Hi,
Thanks for your responses.
solo - I imported it in millimeters and meters and it still didn't work
pmolson - I exported the .max file to .3ds in 3DS Max 2010 (student trial version)
EarthMover - I am more of a newbie in Max than I am in SU so I have no idea what you are on about! I couldn't find "optimizer" just "ProOptimizer" and that killed my machine!
I've attached some pictures if that helps

Tas, if you can send me the .3ds file, I may be able to convert it for you.

Hey,
Thanks for the offer - but it's 70mb!
If I upload somewhere, will you be ok to download it?
