A [dumb] question about styles

i am calling this question dumb because i never changed much in the styles i use. i am trying to set up a style to get the appearance you see in the image below. i thought it was just a matter of changing the colors of the background and sky but that does not seem to be the case, as shown in the 2nd image.
could anyone enlighten me on how to tweak a style?

Edson, You seem to have changed the sky to black. Instead of that, leave the sky turned off, turn the background to black and have the ground turned on, but a light grey.
