Why does sketchup display weird mesaurements sometimes?
-
problem again. heres the model. http://depositfiles.com/files/jybvxwsrn

just to clarify where the problem is, its to the last right wall, both sides lower lines where big window connects.
-
anybody? i really want to get back to my model.

i just can't find what you're talking about.. can you put a note on the drawing showing your exact problem? you can use this tool to point to the problem area and write something about it.
also, if you go to model info/stats/purge unused, you can shrink the model size significantly and upload directly to the forum..here's a purged version 190kb vs 5MB (you probably have some big textures attached to the model that aren't being used)
fwiw, i've never (ever) had a problem with SU displaying inaccurate measurements.. if i have measurement inaccuracies, either the lines are drawn wrong or i'm measuring wrong but the actual dimensions are always displayed true.

wasnt sure what abc tool was. so,
the redline all the way to the right the last two red lines state where the problems happens. and where the green arrows point. -
first, there isn't a drawing mistake as far as this is concerned (which i first suspected).. both of the walls/window placement are in fact identical.
the problem is that you have your length units set to an accuracy of 1/16" so you'll only be able to see lengths of that.. the spacing between the walls/window are really 1' 21/32" but since you aren't set up to read 32nd or 64th, you get an approximate sign in front of the measurement ( ~ ).. as in, your measurement looks like this ~1 11/16 or ~1 5/8 when in fact the real measurement falls in between the two.
fwiw, i also set my accuracy to 1/16th because i try to make everything easily build-able using a standard tape measure and most carpenters don't know a measurement of 21/32"... if i do in fact need an accurate # for a line that ends up with a '~' in front, i'll switch my accuracy so i can find out for sure if i'm + or - in the approximation.
if you want to change your accuracy display to see this for yourself, go to Window->Model Info->Units->Precision
good luck -
cool, glad to help out.

thanx dude. this is my first sketchup drawing as i have no other prior 3d experience. i think it looking alright. i suck at art, and i suck at math, but i have aspergers, you know project spectrum? drawing buildings doesn't seem as hard, as drawing other stuff like cars and vehicles. so i have good spatial ability as is known with people with aspergers/autism. which is why i picked up sketchup.i know i have a LONG way to go. but that was INCREDIBLY HELPFUL. have a great day

still something i don't understand, maybe you explained already but, if its exactly the same on both sides, what makes skecthup decide that the last measurement should be any different? i understand that sketchup displays the measurements a certain way, but why was sketchup deciding that the last measurement should be different? there's no reason too? as it an exact copy and paste?
-
right, as i said earlier, it's showing an approximate sign in front of the measurement ( ~ )
if it's showing that, it can be read as 'your length is approximately 1' 5/8 or approximately 1' 11/16'
5/8" is the same thing as 20/32"
11/16" is the same thing as 22/32"the actual measurement of the spacing is 21/32 which falls exactly in between the two.. why sketchup decides to show the error on one side or the other, i'm not sure but the fact is, if you see a '~' symbol in front of the dimension, SU is telling you that this is not a 100% accurate number. if you want to see the true measurements, you'll have to set your precision parameters to 1/32 or 1/64
you're right in that sketchup is displaying some weird measurement but you can't ignore the '~' symbol.. by displaying that symbol, sketchup is making you aware that it's showing you a guess and any measurement with '~' in front shouldn't be accepted as 100% accurate.

i should also add that while i fully understand what's going on here and this isn't a SU measurement bug, i'm not the best at typing/verbally communicating what my brain sees.
maybe another forum member could explain what's happening in a better way than i have?

i tried the precision thing and your were right. putting it back to 1/16th repeats the chosen measurements. would appreciate that very much if somebody did, but you have been more then helpful
